A Church School Class of ten boys and their teacher, Harold S. Latham, organized the club in 1909 as a way of putting into everyday activities the precepts learned from the Good News of Jesus Christ. Originally the club was just for boys and just for those who were enrolled in the Church School. Today, the club includes girls as well as boys and is a service of the congregation to the young people of the community regardless of religious affiliation. It seeks to continue the intent of the originators. PBGC, as its is known, provides supervised activities conducted according to Christian principles and practices. The motto of the club is "God first; other second; I'm third."
Kenneth Pfleger, elder of the congregation, followed Harold Latham as inspirational leader of the club. He served in this capacity from his election as club president in 1914-15 until his death in 1965. Mr. Pfleger led the club to new heights and was its philanthropist, giving of his time and talents unstintingly.
Elder and Deacon Thomas Fraser is the executive director of PBGC as it enters its ninety-sixth year. He continues Mr. Pfleger's model of leadership and is assisted by a staff of professional teachers who serve as supervisors along with senior club members who help monitor activities. The club is directed by a Board of Directors of thirty women and men of the church and community.
Members enjoy the game room, bowling, the gymnasium, and hand crafts which are available. The club is organized into leagues for street hockey, basketball, baseball, etc. Special outings to sporting events are scheduled during the year.
PBGC rooms are open from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday hours vary according to the seasons of the year. Winter Saturday hours are 12:00 noon - 5:00 p.m. A professional educator is on premises when the club is in session.
